Emotional Control

The Emotional Control collection by Ergotreatment is designed to help children understand, express, and manage their emotions in safe, developmentally appropriate ways. Inside this collection you’ll find OT activities, therapy games, and practical learning resources that support emotional regulation, self-regulation, emotions and behaviour, and behavior regulation across home, clinic, and school-based OT settings.

This collection is created for parents, teachers, and pediatric occupational therapists who want structured yet playful tools to help children stay calm, recover from frustration, and handle everyday challenges. You’ll discover printable resources, worksheets, OT printables, and digital activities that can be used in individual sessions, small groups, or as part of a home program. Many of these activities are “print and go”, making it easy for busy families and therapists to support emotional control without spending extra time on preparation.

Emotional control is a core part of child development and a key domain in pediatric occupational therapy, because it directly affects how children participate in learning, play, and daily routines. When children struggle with emotional regulation, you might see frequent meltdowns, difficulty calming down after upsets, impulsive reactions, or “big emotions” that feel out of proportion to the situation. These behaviours are often linked to underlying challenges in self-regulation, attention and focus, executive functioning, and sometimes sensory processing challenges.

The resources in this collection are designed to make these invisible skills more concrete and teachable. Through play-based learning and simple OT activities, children can:

  • learn to name and identify their emotions
  • practice calming sensory strategies and coping tools
  • build frustration tolerance and flexible thinking
  • use visual supports and checklists to guide behaviour
  • develop problem-solving and “stop–think–choose” strategies

Many items can be used as therapy games, family activity ideas, or classroom supports. For example, visual emotion scales, feelings charts, coping strategy cards, and simple turn-taking games can all be used to practice emotional regulation in a playful, low-pressure way. These tools are especially helpful for children with autism, ADHD, learning differences, or other special needs, who may need more explicit teaching and repetition to build emotional control and behaviour regulation.

From an OT perspective, supporting emotional control is not just about stopping “challenging behaviours”; it is about building the foundations of self-regulation, helping children understand what is happening in their body and brain, and giving them concrete options for what to do next. When we pair clear OT goals with consistent home programs, OT home exercises, and easy-to-use visuals, children begin to experience more success in everyday life — at school, at home, and with peers.

Use the Emotional Control collection to create your own emotional regulation toolkit for home, clinic, or classroom. Combine OT resources, worksheets, and calming sensory strategies with everyday routines so that children can gradually learn to recognize their emotions, use healthy coping skills, and participate more fully and confidently in daily activities and relationships.
